We moved premises in Wellington!!
Students returned to classes in Wellington in January to NZ Fashion Tech's new premises in Plimmer Tower off Lambton Quay. This is a fabulous, purpose designed space, with spacious classrooms and there is a separate shared 'breakout' area. Students have the use of a brand new kitchen and lunchroom area.
Diploma in Fashion Technology
NZ Fashion Tech's Diploma in Fashion Technology is now into its third successful year and welcomed a 'sister' class in Wellington in February 2010. Verena Tilson-Scoble will be tutoring the Wellington students, and along with Auckland Diploma tutor, Cheryl Byngeley, is keen to share her knowledge and enjoy the excitement of seeing the students take what they have learnt and using it to build a successful career pathway.

NZ Fashion Tech Graduates
The range of businesses in which NZ Fashion Tech graduates are employed proves the versatility and effectiveness of the programmes. Our graduates are pattern making, cutting, sewing and working everywhere in production with every imaginable product from high fashion garments to spa pool covers.
Due to the high quality of NZ Fashion Tech graduates, they are often the preferred choice for employment in our industry, even though they have completed only six months to 2 years training. Many are entering the industry in exciting positions, often at advanced levels, and competing for these positions with graduates studying elsewhere for three or more years. This level of graduate success is a clear statement about the excellent training they received while at NZ Fashion Tech.
These graduate success stories are being repeated throughout all NZ Fashion Tech sites.
Pramod's Story

When Pramod Prajapati arrived in NZ from India, he had experience in production and manufacturing but needed NZ qualifications. After completing both NZ Fashion Tech Certificates, he has gained a position with Cambridge Clothing as Assistant Production Merchandiser.
He oversees the sampling of designs, sources products and monitors quality, as well as assisting with current production. Pramod credits the courses with giving him the core sewing and pattern design skills which help him in his every day role.
“I like everything about this job – it’s challenging with lots to do” he says. With his career now on the right track, there may be a future opportunity to become a Merchandiser or Senior Quality Technician where he would oversee the entire production process of several labels!
“I enjoyed pattern design, but if I hadn’t done the sewing programme first I wouldn’t have coped with it. I would definitely suggest going to NZ Fashion Tech and build up your career the way you want it!”
Sarah Dill
Sarah Dill doesn’t mind travelling a considerable distance to work at Pumpkin Patch. “It’s a long way, but it’s worth it because there’s nothing I don’t like doing!”
She says the Pumpkin Patch patternmaking team are a great bunch. Her official title is “Junior Patternmaker” and Sarah is also training in the production area doing patterns, sample mock-ups, spec sheets and co-ordinating with other departments, and learning lots!
Sarah didn’t want to spend three years studying. “I’ve always enjoyed sewing and decided that I wanted to work in fashion.” Sarah is glad she made the right choice and studied with NZ Fashion Tech. “Being there made me realise that you don’t need years of training, experience is just as important and you can get that in industry.” And getting paid for it too!

International Perks of the Job!
Former student, Amie Darragh, has taken her skills from strength to strength. A student from our Certificate in Pattern Design programme, she went to work as Production Assistant for internationally recognised Kiwi designer Kate Sylvester.
After 3 years with Kate Sylvester, she moved to Melbourne, Australia and within two weeks, was snapped up by a clothing company, Perks and Mini. They manufacture in China, through Japanese companies based in Hong Kong – a big change from making in NZ.
Amie is now living in Melbourne and travels regularly to Hong Kong and Japan! Now that’s enjoying the benefits of her studies and the PERKS OF THE JOB!
One student who has found success in her chosen field is Wellingtonian, Tilly Murphy. When she joined the programmes at NZ Fashion Tech, Tilly had no idea that learning would be so much fun or that the time she spent in work experience at Voon Fashions would lead to the offer of a full-time position with the company. Sophie Voon, the designer and owner, was so thrilled with Tilly’s skills and versatility that she felt confident enough to offer her a full-time position.
While with Sophie, Tilly was exposed to a wide range of activities from sorting, tagging and pressing garments for the new range to customer alterations, making mock-ups, attending Fashion Week meetings with Sophie, and even modelling for the new season’s catalogue.
